We meet 16-year-old Tennant Riggin and her eight-year-old sister Sophie。 They are fourth-generation survivalists who were born in the woods of Oregon and have never left。 They have never seen the outside world。 They live an uncomplicated life until the day of The Noise!  A sound like nothing you've heard before。 " What had started as a single high-pitched tone had grown to all sounds - high and low, both deep and shrill - screeching, shrieking, all at once" The most horrifying thing that can happen to a person。 It doesn't matter who you are。 If Anna Shim wants you, you will start running。。。。。 What is this anomaly? Why do they need the help of a climatologist, an astrophysicist, geologist, biologist, shrink and a Lieutenant Colonel? Will this mixed bag of people be able to figure it out before it is too late or will they pay with their lives? I will now be signing off all electronic devices。 If you are expecting a message from me please be patient。 It may take a while to reach you because I don't have a pigeon that I can use and my parrot is on the old side! If you want something different to read that will keep you on the edge of your seat and give you heart palpitations this is the book for you! Thank you to J。D Barker, NetGalley and Little, Brown and Company for the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion 。。。more

That question is never really answered。 Instead we get a somewhat overly long narrative that introduces a wide range of characters and keeps ratcheting up the mystery。 Basically, the story has us follow two young sisters who are adversely affected by this noise in different ways。 In addition, there are three other major characters involved in trying to figure out what’s going on: a psychologist, a climatologist, and a Lieutenant Colonel。 The novel starts with a bang which unfortunately fizzles out about a third of the way in。 I was invested enough that I was determined to finish this novel so as to find out what this Noise was all about。 So I kept at it and found that the last third built up the tension and reignited my interest。 However, I was somewhat disappointed in the ending。 I felt there were several issues left unresolved or not sufficiently explained。Thank you to NetGalley and J。D。 Barker for a free ARC in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

I will read anything these two write together because once again, it totally lived up to my expectations and then some! While this one does have a science-fiction feel to it – I found myself completely engaged from start to finish。 This is such a great mash-up genres that really keep you guessing as to what is ultimately going on and where it is heading – it is an excellent thriller for sure, but there are medical and scientific elements, some political vibes and most definitely some horror vibes。 It’s one that has you on edge, creeped out and bugged out for sure!I know this review is vague, but it’s hard to go into details without giving anything away。 I will say that I loved how the story alternated between the different points of view – a survivor, a scientist and a researcher。 Do they all have the same goal in the end? You need to pick this one up to find out!I think this might be a little much for some to take on in light of all that we are dealing with in regards to our pandemic, but I found it to be such an interesting read and just one that made me think we never really know what is going to happen next。 Could this happen in real life? Who knows but it kept me entertained and that’s why I read these books!I love this writing duo and need them to continue writing。 This is the type of book that I am probably going to have to revisit at some point because I’m sure I missed some little clues along the way and that ended was just pure genius。 But more than anything,Audio thoughts: This is the type of book that is made for audio – it’s one that you just don’t want to stop listening to and Amanda Dolan knocked it out of the park with her narration。 She gave each character their own unique voice and personality and her pacing and intonation was spot on! She infused just the right amount of emotion and suspense into her voice as needed, especially that sense of chilling dread at times, and made this audio one that I know I will not forget。 I loved listening to this one!You can see all my reviews at: https://www。alwayswithabook。com/ 。。。more

What is the cause of the noise? What is the word that Sophie keeps saying? How can Tennant help her sister? Where did everyone go? Where is Momma? Where is Poppa?A group of elite government investigators are called in to investigate。 On the team is Dr。 Martha Chan, a psychologist who analyses long term medical emergencies。 She studies them。 Another team member is Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Fraser, a career military leader with a mistrust of civilians。 He is sent to contain them。 The noise is continuing and spreading across the Pacific Northwest, things are getting out of hand。 But how do you study and contain when you don't understand what and why caused this "Noise" to happen? How can you stop something that you have to fight with every fiber in your being to resist? There are several POV's being told in this book and there is a lot of minor characters as well。 Readers will learn things as those in the book do。 I liked the feeling of being unedge and unnerved not know what is happening。 For me, this book is more horrifying than “true” horror, which in many ways makes the book more appealing。This is a book that I was all over the place with rating。 I loved the originality of this book and yet it had me thinking of other books due to the dystopian feel to it。 I had flashes of The Stand, The Walking Dead, The Girl with All the Gifts and even I Am Legend while reading this。 Not that this book's plot is like any of those, (it’s not!) but part of this book brought those to mind。 This book is highly imaginative, and I believe that this book would make a fantastic movie! I could see it playing out in my mind。 There was everything but the kitchen sink thrown into this book! It's part science fiction, part dystopian, and as I mentioned earlier, horrifying。 My one issue with the book is that I didn't connect with any of the characters。 I am speculating that so much time, thought, effort was put into the plot, the execution of the plot, the pacing, the action, and into the "noise" that the characters took second billing。 The "Noise" is a HUGE character is this book and the others pale in comparison。But I cannot deny that the execution of the plot was brilliant。 I feel most of the credit goes to Barker for this。 I can say that this is a book, I enjoyed more after I sat with it and contemplated it。 Very creative and well thought out - again, I feel this is all Barker。 The ending was interesting。。。I wasn't sure what I thought of it at first。 Honestly, I still don't know what I think of it。 I have always devoured J。D。 Barker's books and enjoy those by James Patterson。 This collaboration was enjoyable but didn't grab me as much as their previous collaboration。 Again, I think it is due to me not being overly invested in the characters。 I look forward to their next collaboration and individual works。。Creative, horrifying, original and tense!Thank you to Little, Brown & Company and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review。 All the thoughts and opinions are my own。Read more of my reviews at www。openbookposts。com 。。。more

The Noise is the latest collaboration between ubiquitous thriller manufacturer James Patterson and cult nightmare craftsman JD Barker, a stand-alone which mashes up sci-fi, technothriller and horror genres to produce a story strongly reminiscent of 1990s era Stephen King。 Whether or not you will enjoy this depends on how strongly you value pace, action, visceral shocks and grand-scale threat, over character depth and likeability, plausibility and a rewarding ending。 I’m in between both and have The Noise is the latest collaboration between ubiquitous thriller manufacturer James Patterson and cult nightmare craftsman JD Barker, a stand-alone which mashes up sci-fi, technothriller and horror genres to produce a story strongly reminiscent of 1990s era Stephen King。 Whether or not you will enjoy this depends on how strongly you value pace, action, visceral shocks and grand-scale threat, over character depth and likeability, plausibility and a rewarding ending。 I’m in between both and have yet to decide whether I’m rounding my 3。5 up or down - writing this will hopefully help clarify my thoughts and feelings。Two sisters from an isolated Oregon survivalist community are out checking their traps in the woods, when they are overcome by an excruciating sound that appears out of nowhere。 Thrown into an underground bunker by their parents, they emerge once it’s over to find their village destroyed and everyone gone。 Tennant, sixteen, is powerless to stop the force which overtakes eight year old Sophie, compelling her to run mindlessly at impossible speed。 Captured by the army, they become the subjects of a team of diverse scientists brought in to analyse the anomaly, but it soon becomes clear that the devastation is only just beginning。。。This starts with a bang, and then keeps going。 Told from the perspective of various key characters, we’re drawn into the confusion and fear they experience as they witness literally unbelievable events unfold in front of them。 I personally struggle with books where you have no idea what’s going on - you’re half way through before much is revealed - I always wonder what I missed。 Having said that, do try to avoid spoilers to get the full impact。 Is it a supernatural force, or an alien phenomenon, a vengeful deity or a human conspiracy? I was shocked but not surprised by the final reveal。 The second half has some cinematic action scenes which are just crying out to be made into a movie with lots of CGI。The biggest weakness here was the characters, and if Mr Barker (and no mistake, that’s who wrote this book, and should gain the praise for all the positives - JP just puts his name on the cover to guarantee sales) wants to follow in King’s footsteps, this is the area that needs work。 They are poorly fleshed out, and hard to empathise with or relate too。 Tennant earns some sympathy for her loyal defence of her sister, while Sophie is whiny and annoying from the start。Martha has some kind of oppositional-defiant disorder that I would’ve thought would be incompatible with a medical career, let alone working with the military。 Fraser is rigid and humourless and Harbin has no discernible personality at all。 As for the scientists, a whole bunch are introduced, and I expected them to be killed off one at a time in interesting ways “Alien” style, but most serve little purpose in the plot, so don’t bother trying to remember who’s who。A scenario like this was always going to be difficult to create a satisfying - let alone happy - ending for。 I’m prepared to suspend disbelief in these circumstances and am not even sure what wanted to happen。 While it feels incomplete, I’m not sure that a sequel could add anything worthwhile and I’m not invested enough in these characters to care about what happens next。So would I recommend this book? Yes, with reservations。 Most of my GR buddies who have read it have rated it 4 or 5 stars, and I think it depends what you’re in the mood for - I’m not a big horror fan。 The premise is original, the action propulsive, the gore factor high and the denouement unpredictable, but for me personally it was less enjoyable than I had hoped, so after careful consideration I’m rounding down to 3 stars。Thanks to NetGalley and Little, Brown & Co for the ARC。 I am posting this honest review voluntarily。 The Noise is published on August 16th。 。。。more

I think that Mr。 Patterson was inspired a little too heavily by the many zombie movies and series。 He added a dose of science fiction by imagining a way to connect human brains with the Internet via wi-fi。 Despite the above comment about zombies, the novel keeps the reader interested until the end。So I give it 3 stars and recommend it to fans of zombie stories。

I wasn't impressed with this novel。 This was my 2nd Patterson/Barker book, and I enjoyed The Coast to Coast Murders much better。 In this book, I grew tired of reading about the "zombies。" (That's what I thought of them。) I would have appreciated a better ending, and more ends to be tied up so that more conflicts could be resolved。 I grew bored with this sort, and I wouldn't have picked it up if I'd known what this was going to be about。 I felt like really nothing was resolved by the end。 I'm a b I wasn't impressed with this novel。 This was my 2nd Patterson/Barker book, and I enjoyed The Coast to Coast Murders much better。 In this book, I grew tired of reading about the "zombies。" (That's what I thought of them。) I would have appreciated a better ending, and more ends to be tied up so that more conflicts could be resolved。 I grew bored with this sort, and I wouldn't have picked it up if I'd known what this was going to be about。 I felt like really nothing was resolved by the end。 I'm a big fan of JD Barker, but maybe three stars is too generous。 Thanks, Netgalley, for this arc。 。。。more

Not my usual type of book - more on the science fiction side than fantasy, but I found this to be a really enjoyable read that I couldn't put down。I liked the different character POVs。 Beginning with Tennant and then moving to the doctor was a good segue as Tennant would have been too naive as to how the world works to explain what was happening。I wasn't as keen on the ending。 It wasn't what I was expecting, to be honest。 And maybe that was the point, but that's probably my only real complaint a Not my usual type of book - more on the science fiction side than fantasy, but I found this to be a really enjoyable read that I couldn't put down。I liked the different character POVs。 Beginning with Tennant and then moving to the doctor was a good segue as Tennant would have been too naive as to how the world works to explain what was happening。I wasn't as keen on the ending。 It wasn't what I was expecting, to be honest。 And maybe that was the point, but that's probably my only real complaint about the book。 。。。more

Yet it quickly emerges that this isn’t the only disturbance。 No further details to avoid spoilers。 Wow! Talk about a rollercoaster。 This is the kind of eco-techno horror/thriller reminiscent of the works of the late Michael Crichton and Robin Cook。 The story is told from a number of perspectives: principally Tennant and Dr Martha Chan, a psychologist who analyses large-scale medical emergencies。 There’s also some chapters focused on Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Fraser, a career military man with an inherent mistrust of civilians。 This proved fast-paced and very scary! I will admit that some of the events were pretty gory but that’s an integral part of the apocalyptic sub-genre。 I seriously couldn’t put it down。 Also, some of the wider issues raised within ‘The Noise’, such as humankind’s impact on the Earth, were thought provoking。 It wasn’t all melting body parts。 Patterson and Barker clearly work well together and following this positive experience I will be looking out for their previous joint novel as well as their future collaborations。 。。。more

I’ve enjoyed J。D。 Barker’s books and it definitely feels that he had a strong voice in this one。 The imagery was fantastic and the storyline far out there 。 。 。 as to be expected from Mr。 Barker。 This is a successful collaboration between the two authors and I will now be reading their other work together。 I’m still pondering the ending, which was a bit of a let down for me at first。 I thought I wanted somethin Wow! I chose to read this book after receiving a free e-copy from J。D。 Barker and Netgalley。 All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased。J。D。 Barker is one of my favorite authors。 I’ve read most of his books, and when I have the chance to read another one, I get so excited! The last book I read that he co-authored with James Patterson was very good so I couldn’t wait to see what they had in store this time。 I wasn’t disappointed。You never know what you’re going to get when these tw I chose to read this book after receiving a free e-copy from J。D。 Barker and Netgalley。 All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased。J。D。 Barker is one of my favorite authors。 I’ve read most of his books, and when I have the chance to read another one, I get so excited! The last book I read that he co-authored with James Patterson was very good so I couldn’t wait to see what they had in store this time。 I wasn’t disappointed。You never know what you’re going to get when these two authors team up。 The one thing you can count on is that you’re not going to be able to put the book down。 The Noise began with Tennant and Sophie checking rabbit traps on a normal day and that’s the only “normal” in the book。 The noise, the vibrations, changed their lives forever。 Not only were they the only survivors in their community, but the noise changed them。 I kept wondering why they weren’t affected like the others and I did find out…eventually。The team that was put together by the government consisted of civilians and Fraser, a military officer。 It was frustrating for the members of the team (and me) because it was apparent that they weren’t given all of the information about what was going on。 And teams of soldiers kept disappearing when they went to the area of what was named the “anomaly。”The action was nonstop as was my anxiety。 It’s been a long time since I read a book that made me feel so stressed! It reminds me of early Stephen King, where regular people end up in weird situations。 Only this situation is feasible, I think? That makes it that much scarier。I definitely recommend The Noise。 I can’t wait for their next collaboration! 。。。more

This was a fantastic read! As I’m a huge fan already of James Patterson, I knew this would be good and this did not disappoint。 I would say this is a thriller with a sci fi feel which I didn’t expect, thoroughly enjoyable。 Must say I did find some parts a bit horrifyingly scary, I did have to check to see if this was classified as a horror。 The story is about two sisters who are the only survivors of a village that was decimated and a team of experts are trying to find out what happened。 Highly This was a fantastic read! I didn't read the publicity blurb prior to requesting this, and I never read the publicity blurb before starting reading。 The fact that J。D。 Barker is co-author was good enough for me。 And I hit the jackpot! I am so pleased I never read the blurb; I would never have requested this and I would have missed out on a spectacular read。 The story is told from the points of view of Tennant, the girl whose sister Sophie is affected by The Noise; Martha a psychologist who deals with large scale medical emergencies, and who is called on to study both this emergency and the sisters; Fraser, a career military officer who dislikes and distrusts civilians, and whose job it is to contain both the sisters and those brought in to examine them and the site; and briefly, the President of the United States, who faces a decision that no other president in history has ever faced。 If you are going to pick The Noise up, and I strongly recommend you do, set a day aside with no distractions or interruptions to read it。 It's not a long read, but it is action packed。 This is no runaway train。 There is no slow start, no build up。 This is a bullet train - it starts fast and just gets faster, more suspenseful, more thrilling, and scarier。 Personally, I find the scariest things are those that are possible。 The Noise falls into this category。 It scared the living bejesus out of me。 And I loved it。 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐#TheNoise #NetGalley #RandomHouse I: @jamespattersonbooks @jdbarker_author @randomhouse T: @JP_Books @jdbarker @randomhouse THE AUTHORS: James Patterson is the world’s bestselling author and most trusted storyteller。 He has created more enduring fictional characters than any other novelist writing today。 J。D。 Barker is a New York Times and international bestselling American author of suspense thrillers, often incorporating elements of horror, crime, mystery, science fiction, and the supernatural。DISCLOSURE: Thank you to Random House UK, Cornerstone, Century via Netgalley for providing a digital ARC of The Noise by James Patterson and J。D。 Barker for review。 All opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own personal opinions。 For an explanation of my rating system please refer to my Goodreads。com profile page or the about page on sandysbookaday。wordpress。com This review will also be published on Twitter, Amazon, Instagram and my webpage https://sandysbookaday。wordpress。com/。。。 。。。more

Bam cooks the books ;-)

*3。5 stars rounded up。 This was pure escapism; definitely action movie material。 The plot was a bit of a hash with thin characterizations but I gobbled it up and thoroughly enjoyed the ending。 I received an arc from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review。 Many thanks for the opportunity to read the latest thriller from two of the best in the business!

If you hear it, it’s too late。 Can two sisters save us all?In the shadow of Mount Hood, sixteen-year-old Tennant is checking rabbit traps with her eight-year-old sister Sophie when the girls are suddenly overcome by a strange vibration rising out of the forest, building in intensity until it sounds like a deafening crescendo of screams。 From out of nowhere, their father sweeps them up and drops them through a trapdoor into a storm cellar。 But the sound only gets worse 。 。 。Yet another James Patt If you hear it, it’s too late。 Can two sisters save us all?In the shadow of Mount Hood, sixteen-year-old Tennant is checking rabbit traps with her eight-year-old sister Sophie when the girls are suddenly overcome by a strange vibration rising out of the forest, building in intensity until it sounds like a deafening crescendo of screams。 From out of nowhere, their father sweeps them up and drops them through a trapdoor into a storm cellar。 But the sound only gets worse 。 。 。Yet another James Patterson book that doesn't disappoint。 A suspenseful, thrilling roller coaster ride of twists and turns, that just as you think you have worked it out, you are thrown into turmoil once again。 The characters were all interlinked well。 It was a page turner and the ending was a surprise that you didn't expect。 。。。more

James Patterson and J。 D。 Barker's 'The Noise' centres around a catastrophic event in North Western USA which baffles scientists, politicians, even the president - where did it come from? If not, can they be contained?About halfway through the book I did find myself thinking the premise had become somewhat bizarre。 No reasons for these events were given, and it was hard to get beneath the surface of the characters which meant I wasn’t unduly invested in learning what happened to them。 Towards the final ten chapters there was a ratcheting up of events/pace, which could have been exhilarating but which actually felt as if the writers were running out of time and felt a quick burst would get them to the end quicker, even if it made little sense。The book was easy to read and I liked the idea。 Unfortunately, I just felt rather too removed from it all to find myself that engaged in things by the closing stages。 。。。more

This is sooo out of my comfort zone but I decided to give it a go because, well, a change is as good as a rest, no? And y'know what, in a daft Hollywood disaster thriller horror blockbuster which may or may not have lots of CGI of stuff blowing up and The Rock saving everyone kind of a way, I really rather enjoyed it。 It is, broadly, a tale of disaster and carnage sweeping the globe, survival, and trying to find out why it's all gone pear shaped。 Now, if that sounds a little close to home right This is sooo out of my comfort zone but I decided to give it a go because, well, a change is as good as a rest, no?
